Lord of The Flies

We have crossed a threshold recently, where, when a group of families get together, our kids are old enough to be able to join the fray unattended. This in turn, signifies another new beginning: the dawn of adult conversation. It’s awesome. A huge relief. We sit and talk, drinking wine. The kids race around various apartments and houses and backyards, forming their own governments. But it does come with a teeny bit of anxiety, when I see the parade of maniac children race by, wondering which one’s going to be the first ritual sacrifice.

And of course, praying it’s not mine. Lately, the words Lord Of The Flies seem to come up at almost every party.

Jerusalem bus bomb blast

A 60-YEAR-OLD woman was killed and 45 people wounded when a bomb exploded at a phone booth next to a bus stop at the entrance to Jerusalem.

The device exploded as a bus pulled up, wounding people waiting at the bus stop and passengers inside the vehicle.

The 1-2kg device was packed with metal pellets to cause maximum devastation. Just seconds before the blast, a kiosk owner opposite the bus stop had phoned the police emergency number to warn of a suspicious shopping trolley left at the stop.

Jerusalem suffered dozens of bombings during the second Intifada, which started in 2000, but the last bus bombing was in 2004.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but one possibility was that the attack was carried out to avenge Tuesday’s Israeli air strikes in Gaza in which eight Palestinians were killed, including two children.

Islamic Jihad in Gaza said the attack was “a clear and powerful message to Israel that her crimes won’t be able to break the resistance”. Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas condemned both the bombing and the recent Israeli strikes. The prime minister, Salam Fayyad, denounced the bombing as a shameful act that harmed the Palestinian struggle for independence.

Israeli police said there was no intelligence information prior to the attack. Officials expressed doubt that the bombing marked the beginning of a new wave of terror.

Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat said terror would not disrupt the day-to-day life in the capital and he stressed that tomorrow’s Jerusalem marathon will go ahead.

Before departing for Russia last night, Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Israel would respond to those who tested its resolve. “The government, the army and Israel’s citizens have an iron will to defend the country and its citizens. We will operate aggressively, with responsibility and wisely to maintain the quiet and security of the last two years,”

Zooey Deschanel Does Not Look Like Herself in Rimmel London's New Ad

Zooey Deschanel is a beautiful young woman who wears lipstick oh-so-well, so she must have seemed a natural choice to represent Rimmel London's Lasting Finish Lipstick. But Zooey's cutesy, quirky features are barely recognizable in an ad image making its way around the web this week, thanks to someone's overeager tango with Photoshop.

According to Become Gorgeous, Zooey wears Rimmel London's Heart Breaker shade in the image, which features her face in front of a British flag drawn in cosmetics. It also features the blankest of blank stares.

The Basic Rules of Society - Don't Be a Mean Guy

How could we tell others "Don't be a mean guy"?
(Guy in this article signifies men and women of all ages.)
If we'd do that some would throw back negative words in return, some would be in a stage of denial, and some would say "Yes," and that is right.
Life matters to most of us, but in a society full of concerns, there are times, we forget to be good to others. We forget we have to be prudent, we forget to be humble and must serve and love each other. That happens often.
I do not write this article to glorify myself. I am writing the articles to stir thoughts, I pray for good thoughts and positive acts for everyone.
Most of the time I look up to old people who have lived meaningful lives. I try to profit from the good things they had done, and I try not to do the negative actions that might happen again. I am aware that when people grow old, they grow with grace, with love, and with wisdom. They have lived for others like their families, friends, workplaces, communities, and country. For sure, they have very beautiful things to share even in the years before they die.
"A life well lived is a good preparation for death," let me stress that.
There are many ways when we could be good to others. Usually, these way are unknown to other people. Doing a good act is a secret pact with God and to those who received them. Well, maybe, some come to announce them for prayer support.
But then, there are those people who can look so rigid but in their hearts they have megatons of charity for anyone and for everyone. These acts are powerful offerings to lay before heaven and come to be pure prayers for humanity.
How could we act prudently, but joyfully?
Thought: Try to list down the advantages and disadvantages of plans, projects, duties, or action to be taken. Add the advantages. Add the disadvantages. Usually, the answer is in favor of the greater value or profit, but then check, if that would benefit the majority of mankind. If one man suffers, that is a violation to life. What is necessary? And the brain storming comes in like flashes of lightning from north, south, east and west. Hence, we must pray for good guys (men and women) to be holy workers.

Where is truTV?

Where to find truTV is a question a lot of college basketball fans are asking this week, since the truTV cable network for the first time (along with sister stations TNT and TBS) will be telecasting entire games of the NCAA basketall tournament.

The truTV network, once known as Court TV, will telecast all four of the “First Four” games Tuesday and Wednesday (including Clemson’s and UNC-Asheville's first-round games tonight) and then have games throughout the weekend (including Duke’s 2:40 p.m. first-round game Friday vs. Hampton in Charlotte -- that game will NOT be on CBS).

This is all part of the NCAA’s new 14-year TV deal, which was hammered out in Charlotte last April and which I’m writing about in depth for Wednesday’s newspaper.

But in the meantime, where’s truTV? Here’s a partial list, and if you aren’t on one of these then look on your TV for the channel guide or go to ncaa.com for more details.

In Charlotte on Time Warner Cable, truTV can be found on Channel 75; the HDTV version is 1313. For Comporium, it is channel 233. For Dish Network it is channel 204 and for DirecTV it is channel 246. On AT&T U-verse, it is channel 165. For MI-Connection, it is channel 31.

In general, truTV is usually found very close to TNT and TBS because all three are owned by Turner Networks. It is on most basic cable packages.

Why Is There No New Gossip Girl Episode Tonight, March 14?

Brace yourselves, GGers, because Gossip Girl Season 4 isn't coming back until April 18. On that Monday far, far in the future, we'll return to the Upper East Side — and that fateful, time-stopping kiss — with Episode 18, "The Kids Stay in the Picture."

This episode, the first of Gossip Girl's end-of-season run, promises to be very Dair-ing. Based on the preview, Vanessa finds out about Dan and Blair and tells Chuck, who confronts Dan. In the meantime, the van der Woodsen clan endures a media maelstrom in the wake of Lily's decision to turn herself in.

Romance? Check. Scandal? Check. Haute fashion? Check. Scheming? Double-check. "The Kids Stay in the Picture" promises to have it all!

Small Fire Extinguished at Library of Congress

The Madison Building at the Library of Congress in Washington has reopened Friday after being briefly evacuated because of a small electrical fire in the basement.

The fire broke out in the morning and was contained to a basement. D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer says the fire stemmed from an electrical problem involving a generator, but the exact cause has yet to be determined.

U.S. Capitol Police say there were no injuries and no immediate reports of damages. The building on Independence Avenue was evacuated and neighboring streets were shut down.

Rascal Flatts

Local college basketball fans still smarting from recent NCAA restrictions may find some resonance in "Runnin' Rebels of UNLV" (HBO, 9:30 p.m.), a new documentary about Jerry Tarkanian creating a major college basketball force in the desert before the NCAA lowered the boom on him. Like most HBO Sports documentaries, it's narrated by Live Schreiber and very well done.

Any UConn fan, though, will be watching the Big East Final (ESPN, 9 p.m.) with Huskies vs. Louisville. It's not the only local team in a big championship. It's UHart women at BU (CSN, 7 p.m.) in the America East final.

It's a good idea to pair a couple of the standout cast of "iCarly" in a TV movie, but "Best Player" (Nickelodeon, 8 p.m.) shows how tricky it can be to pair the funny Jerry Trainor with Jennette McCurdy. They play rivals at a video game, but he's much older than her. But is he old enough to be dating her mom to gain intel?

It may be the longest war in U.S. history, but at least they get this: "Ron White's Salute to Troops" (CMT, 9 p.m.), taped from the front lines of Nashville. Oddly, it overlaps with another of his comedy specials, "Ron White: Behavioral Problems" (Comedy Central, 10 p.m.).

"Rascal Flatts: Nothing Like This" (ABC, 9 p.m.) is a country concert special recorded at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.

Karl Pilkington finishes his travels on "An Idiot Abroad" (Science, 10 p.m.) and chats with Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant about what he's learned.

Bobby Flay goes on a food tour to Ireland on the special "Bobby's Ireland" (Food Network, 9 p.m.).

New movies on cable tonight include Will Forte as "MacGruber" (HBO, 8 p.m.) and Russell Brand in "Get Him to the Greek" (Cinemax, 10 p.m.).

Last Sunday's premiere of "Secret Millionaire" (ABC, 10 p.m.) gets a rerun.

In the flurry of college men's basketball tournament finals, it's UTEP vs. Memphis (CBS, 11:30 a.m.) in Conference USA; BU vs. Stony Brook (ESPN2, noon) in the America East; Morgan State vs. Hampton (ESPN2, 2 p.m.) in the MEAC; Texas-San Antonio vs. McNeese State (ESPN2, 4 p.m.) in Southland; Arizona vs. Washington (CBS, 6 p.m.) in the Pac-10; Kansas vs. Texas (ESPN, 6 p.m.) for the Big 12 title; Akron vs. Kent State (ESPN2, 6 p.m.) in the MAC; Long Beach State vs. UCSB (ESPN2, 8 p.m.) in the Big West; Grambling vs. Alabama State (ESPNU, 8:30 p.m.) in the SWAC; UConn vs. Louisville (ESPN, 9 p.m.), of course, in the Big East; and Utah State vs. Boise State (ESPN2, 10 p.m.) in the WAC final.

Semifinals include Alabama vs. Kentucky (ABC, 1 p.m.) and Florida vs. Kentucky (ABC, 3 p.m.) in the SEC; Dayton vs. St. Joe's (CBSCS, 1 p.m.) and Temple vs. Richmond (CBSCS, 3:30 p.m.) in the Atlantic 10; North Carolina vs. Clemson (ESPN, 1 p.m.) in the ACC; Ohio State vs. Michigan (CBS, 1:40 p.m.) and Michigan State vs. Penn State (CBS, 4 p.m.) in the Big Ten.

Women's finals today have Louisiana Tech vs. Fresno State (ESPNU, 4 p.m.) in the WAC; Utah vs. TCU (Versus, 4 p.m.) in the Mountain West; Navy vs. American (CBSCS, 6 p.m.) in the Patriot; Prairie View vs. Southern (ESPNU, 6 p.m.) in the SWAC; Hartford at BU (CSN, 7 p.m.) in the America East; Central Florida vs. Tulane (CBSCS, 8 p.m.) in Conference USA.

In the women's CAA semifinals it's James Madison vs. Virginia Commonwealth (CSN, noon) and Delaware vs. UNC Wilmington (CSN, 2:30 p.m.).

Amid all of this (and it's not even "madness" yet) there is room for one NBA game: Lakers at Mavs (NBA, 9 p.m.).

In hockey, it's Islanders at Devils (MSG, 7 p.m.), Sabres at Maple Leafs (NHL, 7 p.m.) and Rangers at Sharks (MG, 10:30 p.m.).

But in spring baseball it's Marlins at Red Sox (NESN, 1 p.m.).

Zach Galifianakis has proven one of the best recent hosts of "Saturday Night Live" (NBC, 11:30 p.m.); he's back again for a new show tonight, with Jimmy J as musical guest.

Kelly Osbourne 'Definitely

She added to Britain's Cosmopolitan magazine: "I'm the most content I've ever been. I feel like I've had a second chance. I burnt a lot of bridges and was rude to a lot of people, but that was because I was so angry with myself that it came out in ways that, a lot of the time, made other people look bad. Now, when people are willing to be good to me and give me a second chance, it makes me feel so lucky and I appreciate my life a lot more.......
