Nine riders, Giovanni Visconti (Farnese Vini – Neri Sottoli), Yaroslav Popovych (RadioShack), Mickaël Chérel (AG2R), Jan Bakelandts (Omega Pharma-Lotto), Alessandro Vanotti (Liquigas-Cannondale), Pablo Lastras (Movistar), Filippo Savini (Colnago-CSF Inox), Mathias Frank (BMC) and Joan Horrach (Katusha) attempted an early break, but halfway up the final climb, the group shattered.
